Album Review: WaxWorm – Mea Kulpa (Trepanation Recordings)
WaxWorm, a new industrial-tinged project featuring Arthur Brown (based in Sydney, Australia) and Duncan Evans (former member of A Forest of Stars), will release their debut album, Mea Kulpa, on July 23rd, 2021 via Trepanation Recordings.
Mea Kulpa is the product of several collaborative sessions between its creators (some in-person and some conducted remotely) which began in 2008. The project was shelved and revisited several times, and was finally completed in 2021.
Duncan commented:
I’m really excited that Mea Kulpa, the upcoming WaxWorm album, is going to be released this summer. The project, which is a collaboration between me and my friend Arthur Brown, grew out of just throwing sounds and ideas around and letting the music evolve naturally. We wanted to make something heavy without using guitars, and we also wanted to borrow some ideas from electronic music and industrial. We’re really proud of the way the music turned out. We call dark electro-chaos, and we hope you enjoy the record.
Dark industrial and chaotic electronica, it’s the only way to describe this mind-melting slab of music. From the moment the bassy throb and horror-esqe sound of Mutus Liber comes crawling out of the well to the moment Klexos’ cold and spacey melodies make you feel disconnected from the world, Mea Kulpa entrances.
That is the best word for it. Entrancing. It has a heaviness to it but not in the traditional rock and metal way. If you’re a person to lives and dies on the need for guitars and drums in heavy music, this isn’t going to be for you.
It would be a shame to miss out on some of the electrifying tracks that appear here though. WaxWorm are brimming with imagination and nowhere is that better exemplified then with the 10+ minute weirdness of Rosarius. The near silence, punctuated by the flicker of effects, building towards a mind-warping sound where vocals echo in the darkness. Absolutely mental stuff.
It’s very strange but that makes it all the more fascinating. It’s not going to be for everyone but if you’re after something really different, WaxWorm have you covered.
