Album Review: Wax on Water – Procession (Howling Tempest Records)

Wax on Water is Maya Fire, lead singer and main songwriter, hailing from Camden, London. An industrial rock act in the vein of Nine Inch Nails. Her new album entitled ‘Procession’ is out on July 6th 2018 and she had this to say about its creation:

“The motivation behind the album was to create something visceral and aurally descriptive of where I was mentally. I had reached a place where anger and fear were starting to distort my inner self and I was starting to lose a sense of hope for any kind of desirable future, so Procession was about creating a gateway back to myself. The album deals with dissolution, reckoning and rebuilding; one of the definitions of Procession is ‘the act of coming forth from a source’, as well as describing forward movement and this represented that time of exploration – both personally and creatively.”

The dark industrial groove and electro heavy sound of Wax on Water is one that you’re likely going to be hearing a lot more in the future based off this album. This is a force to be reckoned with, Maya Fire is force to reckoned with and An Army shows that off nicely with its distorted guitars and catchy vocals.

Surprisingly heavy at times, the electro fuzz and meaty bass lines don’t overshadow much of the melody that makes it an album that is far more listenable then you might initially expect. The latest single, Chelsea Fuck and the following Sonic are great examples of the variety and creativity of the album. The former creeps from one end to another while remaining effortlessly catchy.

The keyboards in Innate gives it a real personal feel while Enamour’s retro synth beat is equally as cool-sounding. Procession wraps up with the title track, a dark and melodic listen that is pretty with its softness.

There’s been a hell of a lot of effort put into Procession and Maya Fire can be rightly very proud of her work. Procession is going to take the industrial rock/metal world by storm.
