Album Review: War Legion – Gran Satanás (Self Released)
Hailing from Columbia, War Legion’s debut album is one filled with pure fury & chaos. Gran Satanas was self released in November 2016.
Gran Satanas is a 6 track album that oozes blackened metal out of every pore. It’s got a real old school raw sound, super-fast pace & very shoddy production. Picking individual elements out can be an absolute headache of a task as it all often melds into one extreme sound.
There are no real surprises here, it’s 6 tracks of intense black metal riffs, bile inducing vocals & ear-shattering drumming (in particular the crashing of the symbols). The first song, Intro – Gran Satanás, will likely see most listeners making up their mind about War Legion instantly.
If you’re a fan of the likes of Dark Funeral & Marduk then Gran Satanás will be right up your street. It never lets up, the intensity of the black metal blasting your ears is disruptive & unsettling but often really enjoyable.
En Nombre de Satán in particular is a harrowing experience but it’s Destroying the Enemy that really unleashes Hell. Incredibly frantic & desperate sounding. The pounding & crashing of the drums reaches new levels on Guerra y Sodomía before La Era del Mal finishes things off with a final blast of molten black metal to the face.
Gran Satanás is not going to be to everyones taste. It’s a raw, visceral & bloodied listen but it’s intensity can’t be matched.
