Album Review: Wall – Brick by Brick (APF Records)
Wall, the instrumental 2-piece heavy riff machine, built ‘Brick by Brick’ & riff by riff by twin brothers and Desert Storm members Ryan & Elliot Cole, will release their new album on August 30th, 2024, via APF Records.
Do you enjoy riffs? Sabbath-style doom? Groovy heaviness with a thick infusion of sludge? If the answer is yes (which it really should be) then you’re in for a very good time with Wall’s new album. Although, chances are, you already know that and are totally aware that the brothers Cole know how to deliver banging instrumental heaviness that worships the ground that the likes of Tony Iommi walk upon.
Featuring thirteen tracks, two of which are covers, and a stupid amount of riffs, Brick by Brick is one seriously hefty beast. From the start, the groovy doom-infused and sludgy heaviness is utterly delightful. Wrath of the Serpent, Sonic Mass, Obsidan, and Legion. All offering up varying degrees of heavy. Compelling heaviness, that’s the important thing, and almost always sounding and feeling fresh and clever. Especially as Wall have innovate ways that showcase creativity in spades.
Following that series of bangers, it’s the first of two covers as Karma to Burn’s Nineteen gets the Wall treatment. An excellent and respectful version and you can feel the love Wall have for the band. Before an thrilling infusion of vitality comes via the lovable Avalanche, the punchy Masking My Contempt, and the wacked out groove of The Tusk. This is the s**t head-bangers and body-shakers should be craving.
There’s no debate that Wall can fill a hungry listener up too. Especially when a hotter tempo and rocking vibe is forced down throats via the frolicking fun of Speedfreak. It may not be the most complex of efforts on this album, but it is just as lovable.
The end is in sight, but first, how’s about the dusty and dreamy flavour of Falling from the Edge of Nowhere? An intermission and chance to take a pause, ready for the final run of tracks that put the emphatic stamp of creative, riffy, groovy, energised, and exciting sounds on things. From the thickness of Cirrhosis, to the dirty doom of Filthy Doner Kebab on A Gut Full of Lager, and a fantastic cover of Black Sabbath’s Electric Funeral, the album stays hot right to the very end!
