Album Review: Vomitriste – Black Abyss Invocation (Roman Numeral / Machine Tribe Recordings)

The Finnish black ambient/death industrial duo Vomitriste are releasing their new album ‘Black Abyss Invocation’ in conspiracy with Roman Numeral and Machine Tribe Recordings on January 24th, 2025.

Oppressive darkness, rumbling horror, demonic screams… the introduction to Black Abyss Invocation is something else. A truly disconcerting experience that combines ambient noise elements with garish industrialism warped around the sense of blackened death. It’s hellish and goes on for over eight minutes. Void Sermon is one hell of an opener, especially if this is your first taste of Vomitriste’s wickedness.

Uniquely appealing and undeniably polarising, Vomitriste continue to create an immersive soundscape with the haunting Humiliation Ritual. The duo’s patience is incredible, even if it promises to test the listeners. Yet, it is very rewarding too. The likes of Opilione showing just how a state of constant discomfort can be so enjoyable.

It can’t be stated enough, Black Abyss Invocation is so atmospheric and love it or hate it, no-one can deny Vomitriste’s creative talents. Each track feels like the veil between worlds is being pulled apart. Each track feels like hell is a step away, and each track feels like wicked things are standing just a hairs breadth away from you. How else can you describe the listening experience that is Fleshwards and Maugre if not one born of malicious and salacious things?

It’s an experience that doesn’t drag on either and as the sinister tones and troubling ambience of Amber Doorway arrives, the hairs on the back of the neck begin to stand up. This track is unlike anything else on the album as far as immersion is concerned and will leave the listener feeling so cold. It alone raises the bar for this style of music and makes Black Abyss Invocation a must listen, if only to understand what Vomitriste have created here.

I’m not going to promise you that you’ll like it, but you will be taken in by it. Something wicked this way comes.
