Album Review: Viscera – Carcinogenesis (Unique Leader)
Featuring former members of Heart of a Coward, Abhorrent Decimation, Martyr Defiled, Nervecell and Surfaces. Viscera combine the best elements of classic 90s metal, 00s metalcore and modern deathcore. They will release their sophomore album, Carcinogenesis on March 3rd, 2023.
An epic introduction, the title track’s cinematic start is how you get the blood pumping noisily in the temple. Perfectly preparing the listener for the onslaught of heavy that comes as the track opens up. The volatile blend of instruments and vocals giving this a deathcore feel but with expansive touches that make it sound and feel so much bigger. Extremely wild, the bristling intensity of it all is delightful.
That is just the start though and if there’s one thing the whole Carcinogenesis album delivers, it is consistent viciousness. Viscera are on absolute fire here and as they expand on their sound to include more metalcore elements, they only get hotter and the whole album only gets better.
Delivering earth-shattering heaviness tinged with melodic depth and progressive sounding spots, Rats with Wings and Layers of Skin wreck necks. The rippling instrumental power is startling, but when combined with roaring vocals, it’s extremely special sounding. No easy task when you consider just how many great brutal bands and releases are around.
Viscera’s brutality might not be on another level but what they do with it, is. Continuing to kick all kinds of ass with Resolver, Omnipotence, and Sungazer. The middle portion of this album featuring an array of crashing, bashing, and smashing heaviness that blends eras of metal wonderfully. Almost always focused on a death-fusion style, but with a willingness to expand into experimental and eccentric areas that fascinates constantly.
A fascination that is as strong as the love for this record is. Especially when the intense power of Lex Talionis and the gargantuan melodies of Demon Queen are so damn enjoyable. Capped off with more cinematic touches and epic metal grandeur in the form of the stunning On Earth as it is in Hell.
Viscera really are such a talented bunch and Carcinogenesis is an exceptional showcase of that.
