Album Review: Vermilia – Kätkyt (Self Released)

Finnish pagan metal artist Vermilia will release her anticipated debut album entitled, Kätkyt (Finnish for Cradle) on June 29th 2018 through all major digital distributors.

Mixing black metal with haunting pagan vocals, Vermilia play around with the idea of beautiful darkness for the eight tracks that make up this astonishing release.

The moody Äiti Maa brings with it a level of morose heaviness to kick things off, Vedestä Vieraantunut follows that up with a stunning showcase of savage guitars, unrestrained drumming and haunting vocals before Haudoille deepens the connection felt with Kätkyt even further.

The previously released single, Poissa had already made a splash with us (read our review here) and time hasn’t dented its impact. Here the heaviness of the black metal combines with the melodic vocals & makes for an absolutely beast of a track.

If by the halfway stage you’re not quite convinced that you’re listening to one of the albums of the year then hold on as Vermilia are far from finished with you.

Saattajia leans a lot more towards the pagan metal sound, Maisema brings folkish melody that blends perfectly with savage heaviness, Sanattomat Laulut has hypnotic rhythm and Mustan Taivaan Morsian truly proves what you should already know by now…this is an utterly spell-blinding album. As a finale goes, it takes you on an emotional ride that feels like the completion of a journey.

More people need to be talking about Vermilia. They really are something special.
