Album Review: Vantablack Warship – Abrasive Pulmonic Speak (Self Released)

Hailing from Canada’s molten cauldron of metal, Vantablack Warship will unleash their new album, Abrasive Pulmonic Speak on January 26th 2018.

Guitarist Pat Gordon comments:

“Abrasive Pulmonic Speak, the title of our album is a testimony to the harshness of our lyrics and music. They are pretty hardcore! But it also refers to the title track, which is based on the works of Henry Miller. He was expatriated for some of his earlier works that he put into print that at those times people never dared say out loud. We are trying to channel that but from another an angle which is the stereotype that comes with metal music, which, quite frankly is tired. We have metalheads that are well into their 60s and 70s today. It’s annoying that people see us as a subculture when in fact we are a very legitimate culture.”

Eight tracks of titanic metal that spans sub-genres. From the opening hardcore groove of Another Dead Rockstar to the fierce riffing & desperate screaming vocals of Black Tongue Bertha to the moshpit anthem of Blood on the Mat, Vantablack Warship spit corruptible venom with their in your face efforts.

There is a huge amount of energy within Vantablack Warship & most songs are fast-paced chunks but when they do drag things down to a lower & dirtier effort, it’s no less exciting. The drop into a sludgy & filthy sound halfway through Kill the Kid is just excellent.

There is no denying just how bouncy the hardcore beat of the title track is. Offering a different kind of catchiness, the aggression gives way to quality heavy riffs resulting in a song that you just want to lose your shit too.

A short album, it’s over very quickly as The Blackhole softens things up so that Crisis can finish you off. A bloodying effort that drags its heels while also stamping hard on your groin. The doomy riffs, guttural vocals & traditional sounding guitar solo are an unexpected change but not an unwelcome one.
