Album Review: Vahrzaw – The Trembling Voices of The Conquered Men (Transcending Obscurity Records)
Australian black/death metal band Vahrzaw will release their new album, The Trembling Voices of The Conquered Men on December 10th, 2021 viaTranscending Obscurity Records.
There are some cool ideas on this album, ideas that step it up from your average black/death release. Ideas such as having a melodic intro and outro that splits the title of the album in half. The bookends really make it feel story-like.
In between? A ton of savage, horror-laden and heavy noise that takes the best parts of the black and death, puts it in a blender and then sprinkles some progressive elements over everything. It is imagination run wild while ensuring fans of a more extreme metal sound will find themselves bowled over by the fire and ferocity that comes from inside.
Death of An Unknown Architect has crunching instrumentation that sounds like a war between the guitars and drums. Before the tempo shifts, chaos erupts, and the vocals start to spit venom. Waiting With the Wolves has a jagged and serrated edge, As Ships Upon Shores has doomy drips oozing from the cracks of granite Vahrzaw have built their foundations on and Vultures picks at the carcasses of those who fallen along the way with vehement heavy jabs.
It’s all preparation for the 9+ minute monolithic beast that is The Pessimist. A lumbering monstrosity that can move at an unfathomable speed. Vahrzaw showcasing just how wildly progressive their brand of blackened death can get.
It’s a fascinating listen.
