Album Review: UnityTX – Ferality (Pure Noise Records)

Hardcore/hip-hop band UnityTX will release their new album ‘Ferality’, on September 8th, 2023, via Pure Noise Records.

A band on the rise, UnityTX’s crossover appeal has made them a name spoken with a certain amount of reverence. The blending of hardcore power and hip-hop rhythms might not be the most unique thing, but few bands are doing it in such a passionate way as this band.

Ferality begins in a surprisingly understated way when it comes to speed. UnityTX sounding extremely aggressive but going for a slower groove and a sinister vibe overall. It’s stompy and mean sounding, regardless.

The same feral intensity is prevalent in Burnout, but here the band gets a bit more melodic, showcase clean singing, and lean into their hip-hop side nicely. Then Diamond Diez showcases some industrial beats, the menacing vibes that have been in place so far, heightened again. Before Power takes a lot of its props from the nu-metal era, Picture This is pure hip-hop with some sharp lyrical content, and Sting is thick hardcore two-step mayhem.

Few can claim that UnityTX aren’t showing variety in their sound. Even if not every track hits quite as hard as others.

The latter part of the album continues to see UnityTX showcase all sides of their sound, beginning with one of their most aggressive sounding tracks, Lost in Dayz. It’s a little over a minute and a half long, but a lot of damage is done here.

Then along comes Killing Alchemy and Roc Sh!T, two different but equally UnityTX tracks. The former, having more nu-metal vibes again, and the latter being one hell of an ‘in your face’ slab of heavy. It’s the latter that really hits, UnityTX are at their best with they’re snarling and sneering, and there are few better examples.

Finally, it’s a bit more speed and hardcore stompiness with Fake Luv, before the familiar sound of lower-tempo intensity makes itself known with World of Malice. A solid slab of UnityTX gold to end their most varied release yet. It’s a great example of how to balance hardcore hostility and hip-hop strength.
