Album Review: Turmion Kätilöt – Omen X (Nuclear Blast)

Finnish industrial metal band Turmion Kätilöt return on January 13th, 2023 with their 10th studio album, Omen X. Due to be released via Nuclear Blast.

The legendary industrial metal band start 2023 with a crunchy, energetic, and exciting bang. An 11-track high-powered listen that has the ability to make you dance and head-bang in equal measures. Beginning with the heavy industrial thump and dark metal sound of Totuus. A track that is fast and frenzied, liable to create a sweat-drenched environment regardless of where you are when you hear it.

Following that, Turmion Kätilöt lean more into their catchy, anthemic and populist style with the excellent Gabriel. Hitting another high with a thrilling blend of industrial heaviness, lighter melodies, and undeniable catchy rhythms. Before speed and energy comes back with great aplomb on the dangerous sounding Pyhä Kolminaisuus. Turmion Kätilöt showing that without a doubt, their 10th album is them as fiery and imaginative as always.

Not just that though, it also shows that they are as weird and wonderful as ever. Further proof of that fact coming in the form of the absurdly anthemic pair that is Puoli Valtakuntaa and Verestä Sokea. Two of the most lovable tracks on an album filled with lovable tracks.

This high point in Turmion Kätilöt’s career continues into the heavyweight Isä Meidän, a track that is so hot that it would leave a live audience breathless no doubt. Though there’s no chance of catching the breath or cooling down as Sormenjälki brings forth dance vibes, and Käy Tanssiin brings meaty metal heaviness and wacky turns for everyone to enjoy.

Omen X is a very strong album and genre bends in the best ways possible. Turmion Kätilöt have been doing this for 20 years and their passion continues to burn so brightly. Meaning this album ends as it begun. In crunchy, energetic and exciting style with the pairing of Kun Kesä Kuoli and Kuolettavia Vammoja.
