Album Review: Tungsten – Bliss (Arising Empire)

Industrial power metal band Tungsten have hardly stopped since their formation in 2016 and 2022 is no different. On June 17th, 2022 and via Arising Empire, they will release their 3rd album, Bliss.

So, what does 2022 and the 3rd Tungsten album hold for both new and old fans? More grand industrial power metal tinged with Northern folk, more hook-heavy and rhythmic tunes and more sing-along choruses. Yet, while all of this might feel familiar, there is something notably different this time around.

This is a heavier Tungsten. It’s also a darker Tungsten. A prominent development for the band. Yet, importantly, this doesn’t change the thrilling and fist-pumping groove the band has showcased over the past 6 years. In fact, it almost enhances it. The dynamic melodies and thicker metal edges working to create an intriguing and memorable mix.

Few bands could kick of their album with a ‘made for the crowd’ industrial head-banger and a folksy, upbeat foot-tapper. Yet, that is exactly what Tungsten do with In the Center and Dreamers. Uproariously different, if this is your first rodeo with Tungsten, you’ll find yourself well and truly won over by this start.

There’s plenty more to enjoy throughout too. From the cinematic March Along and the ‘classic’ power metal vibes of Heart of Rust. To the stupendously catchy ‘hoo-ha’ of Come This Way, the dark industrial and blackened beating heart of the title track (Tungsten at their heaviest sounding), the eccentricity of Wonderland and dance-inducing folk hooks of Afraid of Light. Fun is offered and fun will be had.

All leading to a massive ending in the form of Northern Lights. Where Tungsten combine their Northern influences effectively with their penchant for hook-heavy head-bangers and epic singalongs. As grand as it gets, and it gets pretty damn grand on this album.

Tungsten have yet another super-smooth, super-satisfying and super-enjoyable album’s worth of music with Bliss. Music that is familiar, yet has such a unique set-up and delivery, it never fails to entertain.
