Album Review: Transgressor – Beyond Oblivion (Me Saco Un Ojo / Sewer Rot / Unholy Domain)
Me Saco Un Ojo Records, in conspiracy with Sewer Rot Records and Unholy Domain, presents a new mini album from Japan’s Transgressor, Beyond Oblivion. Formed as early as 1989, Japan’s Transgressor is one of those cult names only the deepest dwellers of obscurity might seek. With a healthy-if-sporadic discography, the time for a new MLP is here: Beyond Oblivion. Out on August 24th, 2023.
Old school death metal in its nastiest and rawest form and blended with dark and devious sounding doom, Transgressor may not be a familiar name in this world, but they certainly leave an impression.
It’s murky depths we sink to with this mini album, where five tracks of garish death and grim doom await with an inordinate amount of bloodlust. The goal with this record is seemingly to drag listeners into the past through the nauseating stench of death and the gloomy sound of doom. A goal that Transgressor meet with ease, thanks to their commitment to the sound. When we say that this is a really dark and horrible listen, we mean it.
Yet the dynamic performance of the band makes it way more appealing than you first might expect. There’s a lot of talent in this band, and while they may never have become a well-known name within the death and doom world, they are well worth experiencing.
Maybe it’s finally time for Transgressor to be given their dues.
