Album Review: thrown – EXCESSIVE GUILT (Arising Empire)

Swedish heavyweights thrown will release their highly anticipated debut album ‘EXCESSIVE GUILT’ on August 30th, 2024, via Arising Empire.

One of the most popular up and coming metal bands on the planet, thrown’s popularity only seems to grow day by day and with the release of this debut record, it’s clear that that isn’t going to change anytime soon. EXCESSIVE GUILT is a killer showcase of this band and what they are capable of. Featuring elven tracks but only coming in at around twenty-three minutes, there isn’t a second of filler to be found here.

Banger after banger, showcasing thrown doing what thrown do best, which is keeping things short and intense, brutalising the senses with their unrelenting ferocity, and leaving a hefty impact. Their crossover sound, based within the hardcore and metalcore world but twisted by the sounds of nu-metal, hefty electronica, and trap aspects, is never boring. It’s a heavy album, of course it is, but it’s the varied aspects that make it so interesting. No-one can accuse of thrown of not being emphatically creative.

Filled with a lot of aggression, all kinds of manic tempo switches and breakdowns, showcasing screaming effects, and big, bouncy, anthemic beats. EXCESSIVE GUILT is an absolute barn-burner of no-nonsense, heavy intensity. From the moment thrown come out swinging with the garish metallised fury of guilt, to the moment they offer up something that vibes with bitter friend, to the rabid pit-inducing savagery of ignored, and the moment vent lives up to its name with its explosive, snarling, and spitting levels of ruthlessness, thrown slay.

If you’re familiar with them, none of this will be a surprise, as the band have built up a reputation based on unflinching honesty, having an open-mind when it comes to genre-bending, and delivering a savage repertoire regardless. EXCESSIVE GUILT is impressively digestible too. The short runtime and succinct approach ensuring that the moment it ends, you’ll just find yourself hitting play again. This album was always going to be a big deal, but even still, thrown have found a way to surpass expectations.
