Album Review: The Mosaic Window – Plight of Acceptance (Willowtip Records)

Melodic death/black metal solo act The Mosaic Window has inked a deal with Willowtip Records that will see the re-release of the band’s debut full-length, Plight of Acceptance. Originally released digitally by the band in June of this year, Plight of Acceptance will now appear on CD and vinyl formats on November 10th, 2023.

The Mosaic Window mastermind A.S.B comments:

I am incredibly grateful that Plight of Acceptance has reached so many people and unbelievably stoked that Willowtip has decided to re-release the album and sign the band. There’s no way in hell I ever saw this coming. In general, this album was difficult for me to write and record, since I still felt raw and vulnerable from the deaths of my father and grandmother. I’m just glad I was able to push through and finish the damn thing. It was like a weight lifted off my shoulders. The catharsis was so rewarding, it led me to immediately start writing new songs the day after the release. I can’t wait for folks to hear what’s coming next. It’s going to be sick, haunted, and unhinged.

It makes a lot of sense that Willowtip would have come calling, in fact it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise to learn several labels were eyeing up The Mosaic Window based off Plight of Acceptance.

All the work of one individual, Plight of Acceptance puts a lot of ‘full’ melodic black metal bands to shame with its quality. Featuring seven tomes of extravagant darkness that tread the line between savagery and melody pretty much perfectly. From the moment Comatic Burial arrives in a storm of brutality, the black metal flame is burning brightly, but this is also a strong showcase of The Mosaic Window’s harmonious side too. It’s a surprisingly epic song.

Epic-ness that continues into the unnerving heaviness of The Haunting That Follows, where different tempos can’t hide the overall frenetic energy of this one. Then there is the aptly titled Demon, where The Mosaic Window draws from the deepest and darkest parts of Hell for something that sounds like it revels in your fear. Before the heat is turned up with the wrathfully heavy Furnace, and Spiritual Intoxication has the vocals howling like fiendish beings are attempting to tear the soul from A.S.B’s body.

It’s a damn fine album, and there’s no dip in quality with the penultimate offering of Nails of Holy Origin. A track that showcases horrifying heaviness and melodious pomp. Although, there may be nothing as lavish as the finale of Consumed By A Thought. Not only is it the longest track by some distance, but it is also the most intricate, It also happens to showcase the best of The Mosaic Window by being savage as f**k and intrinsically beautiful.
