Album Review: The Krueggers – Hysterical Cold Side and Dark Memories (Eclipse Records)
Hysterical Cold Side and Dark Memories by The Krueggers contains eleven emotionally energetic songs, showcasing the band’s unique post grunge / nu metal hybrid sound. The album was produced by The Krueggers and mixed by Diego Castro. Hysterical Cold Side and Dark Memories will be released on January 10, 2020.
Post grunge? Well that’s not something you hear every day so there’s a certain level of intrigue when it comes to The Krueggers. Although the added tag of nu-metal also makes sense once you’ve hit play. This certainly is reminiscent of THAT era of rock and metal.
Beginning with the incredibly moody Lying Machine, the groove is filthy and it takes the mind into dark places. Morose vocals powering up for pain-inducing roars while the guitars drag everything and everyone into murky depths.
It’s harsh and uncomfortable but Freak Out takes things in a bit more of an upbeat and bouncier direction.
Before Dark Parade brings some of the albums deepest and grooviest riffs. A highlight, there is some real chug and chunk to this track. Something that The Krueggers excel at and something that lifts them above the tags we mentioned at the start.
If this is nu-metal…well, it’s never sounded quite as good as the likes of Bullshit and On Your Hands do.
Although it does have its flat moments, normally when it leans a little more into grunge territory. Overreaction and Wrong being just two good examples of this. Not bad, just so grungy that it dominates the senses.
Don’t be put off though. Give The Krueggers a chance.
