Album Review: The Black Capes – Looks Like Death (The Council of Bones/Ikaros Records)

Gothic rock band The Black Capes will release their brand-new album, Looks Like Death on March 3rd, 2022 via The Council of Bones in the US and by Ikaros Records in Europe.

Having made a name for themselves within the gothic rock genre, The Black Capes are back to solidify that position with an album that oozes darkness. Catchy and groovy darkness that you will want to embrace. After all, the devil makes the best music and The Black Capes are certainly in league with the underworld.

Melody-driven, a foot-tapping beat and mood-altering vocals, Apocalypsis gets this gloomy party started strongly. Before Asphyxiate aims to choke the life out of you with hazy gothic tones and massive rocking riffs. An opening salvo that eases you in but also makes it clear that The Black Capes are as creative as ever.

Love is Love sees The Black Capes double down on the gloomy feeling but also deliver groovy riffs and enough energy to get the dead up and moving too.

You can use the world ‘anthem’ in your track title but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be an anthem. Thankfully, that is far from the case with The Rejects Anthem. A track that conjures up images of smoky and dark underground clubs with soulless creatures dancing in the shadows. Catchy, even if you don’t consider yourself a reject.

The use of a saxophone at the start and throughout Reset makes for an interesting listen. Before Cruel World dredges the morose depths with powerful riffing and hook-driven elegance, Forever and Ever near-spoken word vocals that reach a crescendo in the chorus are incredibly infectious, and Apathy is far from an apt title. A track that digs deep into the gothic body of The Black Capes to emerge with their still-beating black heart.

An album with ghoulish touches, the title track ups the energy and infuses sci-fi/horror elements as we reach the last stages of the album. Before the Beast Within wraps things up in anthemic style. A finale that builds up the danger before unleashing a sinister and harder rock cacophony. A fun way to end an album that doesn’t take itself too seriously but is also delivering gothic rock gold.
