Album Review: Tayne – Love (MNRK Heavy)
An exploration of love, desire, conflict and fear, ‘Love’ is the new album from London-based Industrial noise pop trio Tayne. Released January 31st, 2025, via MNRK Heavy.
From the moment I saw Tayne play live as support to Wallowing in London back in August 2024, I knew I had found my new favourite band, and I have eagerly awaited this album release. Single after single, filled with all manner of creative and eccentric highs, has done little to dull that desire and I’m so pleased to say that the full thing is everything I wanted, and so much more. This is the noise that I live for, and Tayne are delivering sounds that are injected right into my blood stream.
Pushing boundaries in addictive fashion, the industrial elements of Tayne are on garish display with the obnoxious sound of Erased. An opening track that tells you all you need to know about the ‘heavy’ side of the band. Yet, it is how this track fits alongside a track like Down, where dreamy and psychedelic vibes are so prevalent, that really captures the imagination. This is the Tayne listening experience as a whole. Pop sensations with alternative rock and metal ideology, weird and so freaking wonderful.
The super-talented Rachel Aspe (Cage Fight) is one of two guests on the album and joins the band for the raucous intensity of Coherent. A heart-racing blast of effects, punchy vitality, and shared vocals that are ethereal and scathing. It is abrasive, but in a highly addictive way. Something just as notable on the following Scars (a personal favourite track), where the extreme electronica pop infusions marry with the industrial coarseness really well. It might sound a bit stupid, but this is a track with anthemic touches, all while being dreamily intense.
It’s so impressive that track after track, Tayne tighten their grip, blasting vibrant colours through the mind with the captivating Cause /// Worthless. The rumble of industrial noise, the crunchy breakdown, the sci-fi style blasts of electronica, it’s so good.
The second guest, Rolo Tomassi’s James Spence guests on Fear, a disconcerting listening experience that continues to showcase Tayne’s immense creative abilities. One of the album’s most unique efforts, it’s Tayne at their most innovative and sharing the space with Rolo Tomassi’s James Spence makes it even more special.
It, like so much of the album, is infinitely listenable and there is no doubt that this record will be replayed over and over again all year long. Especially when the likes of We bring some dance floor vibes, albeit one that comes with a whole load of hallucinogens, and Wasted’s punchy riff and drum combo. A treat of a head banger.
All good things must come to an end though, and Tayne warms the soul even more with the immense In This Trend. A track that can be summed up as richly industrial, with excitable post-punk layers, and an overall danceable vibe that just works so well. It is, once again, a track that you just repeat over and over again. Even though the finale of Nothing shouldn’t be ignored, it’s far too dark and delicious.
You won’t spend 30-minutes in a better place. Give Love a chance, Tayne are special.
