Album Review: Syteria – Reflection (Syteria Records/Cargo Distribution)
Blending classic rock stylings with a punk fuzz, great tunes with heart and feel, and bucket loads of passion. Syteria are a band formed by Jackie ‘Jax’ Chambers, lead guitarist of the legendary Girlschool and are based in Yorkshire. They first came onto the scene in 2015, starting their full campaign in 2016 by self releasing their EP ‘Wake Up’. In 2016 they secured a permanent drummer in Pablo Calvo, Julia’s (vocals) younger brother.
In 2017 after a successful Pledge campaign, they recorded their debut album ‘Rantobot’ and received rave reviews worldwide. 2019 saw a new chapter to the Syteria story starting, new bassist Steph Dawson formerly of the band ‘Scream Of Sirens’ joining and recording ‘Reflection’ due to be released on the 21st February 2020 via Syteria Records/Cargo Distribution.
Rock and rolling, Syteria certainly Make Some Noise on the super catchy bounciness of the opener on their new album. It’s not going to blow anyone away in regards to complexity but who cares when it’s this damn energetic and this much of a singalong!
The classic rock/punk fusion really comes together for Goodbye World, a little more subtle then the opener but the riffs are so on point. Followed by more high energy rock and roll with Reflection and Asylum, the latter once again a massive singalong.
The highlight of the album comes next though with the thrilling Gossips. Squealing guitars, sultry vocals and a killer group chorus. Lyrically, it’s nice and sharp but it only enhances the quality.
A very reflective and more mellow Sorry, the punk snarl of As If, the blazing rifftastic Back Off and frantic party of Moving Forward (Angels and Demons) keeps things trucking along nicely. Each with their own style and touches that makes them stand out.
The longer the album goes on, the more plays it has, the more endearing it becomes. What might be a ‘like’ album at first will certainly be a ‘love’ album by time the defiant shouts of I Want it All and Guilty rings out.
