Album Review: Syning – Syning (Terratur Possessions)
Yet again the darkness comes crawling… Syning represent these times perfectly in their all-consuming bleakness and despair. Haunting and hopeless black metal performed by Cernunnus (Manii/Manes), Levninger (Knokkelklang) and V. Einride (Whoredom Rife).
The self-titled release is out on April 9th, 2021 via Terratur Possessions.
Very heavy on the atmosphere, very unusual ambience, Syning are not your average bunch of black metallers. Even though, when they fully form, they have all the raw horror of the traditional scene. What they do differently is the level of anguish they infuse their music with. The three tomes that feature here are dripping in angst and desolation while being irrefutably harsh and heavy.
The first two tracks, Atter Igjen Kommer Mørket Krypende and Et Siste Skrik, are around 27 minutes of crushing pressure. Constantly squeezing and tightening around the mind with all the might of hell itself. Syning rarely relieve the pressure and when they do it’s only to allow you to take a deep breath of their choking atmosphere.
By contrast, not just in length, Fortapt is far more pleasant. Near 7-minutes of cold but peaceful melodies and ambience. There’s darkness, of course there is, but it’s far from as uncomfortable to hear as things elsewhere. At least until the final moments of the track that truly feel like a finale.
