Album Review: Syncolima – Wavelengths (Self Released)

Formed in February 2021, Syncolima are a three-piece riff machine from Nottinghamshire in the UK. Having released their debut album ‘Where the End Meets the Beginning’ to rave reviews, as well as delivering raucous live shows, the group are back with their sophomore release ‘Wavelengths’. Out on April 14th, 2023.

After an impressive showing with their debut album and making a name for themselves on the live circuit, Syncolima strike while the iron is hot with Wavelengths. A ten track head-banger that builds on what the band has become known for, while also showing progression in their sound.

It’s a downright groovy start with Beautifully Unsaid. The riffs are gold-plated, the percussion adds the meatiness, and the vocals flow nicely along with the rhythm. All coming together for an infectious chorus. It’s the first of many bangers on this album.

Speaking of… Riff is high-tempo energy and super-groovy, almost a bit Motörhead like, which is high praise indeed. Syncolima are having some fun with this one, just listen to the lyrics if you don’t quite get that. Hail to the riff, indeed.

The aforementioned progression is really prominent in the trippy Communicide and while, once again, the riffs are amazing, the bass is at the forefront here and it hums. A very lovable track. As is New Beginnings, which is a heavier number with some racing drum beats and growling vocals (although we could do without the burp at the end).

The title track is another highly imaginative sounding effort with echoing melodic guitar tones and creative vocals. Before Death of an Enemy and The Dregs brings the animated groove back with serious head-banging aplomb. Syncolima’s combined talents making these tracks sound as fresh as anything heard so far. If there’s one obvious take away from Wavelengths, it is that it is never boring.

Something that is exemplified by the rockier tone of In the Muck Again, something that has been layered nicely throughout so far but is particularly prominent here. No complaints though as it’s extremely infectious.

Finally, it’s Dead and Gone and Pound of Flesh to wrap up this slice of Syncolima goodness. The former being one hell of a body shaker with some seriously killer riffs, again. Whereas the latter blends girthy heaviness and dramatic melodies for one hell of an epic closer. It’s the cherry on top and it’s fantastic to find Syncolima are just getting better and better as they go on. At this rate, with these sort of releases, and with the level of talent in their ranks, they have all the potential to blow up, big time.
