Album Review: Surgery – Absorbing Roots (Support Underground)

Formed in 2002, Surgery are an old-school melodic metal band from Slovakia. Their second album, Absorbing Roots was released early 2018 via Support Underground.

Surgery 2

Aggressive death metal but with a wonderfully clean and tidy sound, Surgery instantly get the attention by being brutally heavy but without the rawness often associated with extreme metal. They absolutely come firing out of the blocks with wickedly heavy riffing, filthy bass hooks, blasting drums and guttural vocals in the title track, Clinic Death and Image in the Mirror. It’s an incredibly impressive start.

It’s a total ‘no frills’ album and while it does begin to suffer from repetition, it’s not enough to put you off. Absorbing Roots delivers a consistent heaviness that will appeal to all fans of melodic metal especially when those moments are showcased such as on River in Silence and Mental Demise.

Ending with the penultimate track, Grime which switches between slower, dirtier groove with screeching guitars and faster, traditional death metal ferocity. Then Depressive Reality gives us enlightened riffing and a real catchiness that betrays the extreme metal roots but something we can be very grateful for.
