Album Review: Suncraft – Flat Earth Rider (All Good Clean Records)
Heavy, stoner-inspired rock n’ roll: let the quartet that is Suncraft, from the underground scene of Oslo, Norway, seduce you.
Since late 2017, Suncraft have played their fair share of club shows in the nooks and crannies of Norway, honing the craft of playing explosively energetic concerts. After having released their 2019 EP, Saigon, the live-performances abruptly ended in March, 2020. Turning the blow of the pandemic into a positive, the boys put all their efforts into writing their debut album, Flat Earth Rider, which is now set for release on August 6th, 2021 via All Good Clean Records.
The flavour of classic rock is strong with the opening title track and Suncraft put it to good use. Delivering a memorable rock and roll groove effort that has the dusty air of stoner and desert blowing over it. Nice and catchy, the slight gruffness to the vocals really adds a lot to this one.
It’s followed by the excellent Space Buddha. A track that is a bundle of energy and has both a super-catchy chorus and one hell of a kick-ass guitar solo. Before Lingo Hive Mind really starts to lean towards a more stoner-groove sound. Another thrilling listen and not such a shift that Suncraft become unrecognisable. It’s just another layer to their overall sound.
Talking of layers too, Commie Cannibals has the rocking unit move towards doomier territory in a remarkably clever set of twists and turns. Whereas Adaption makes everything feel extra groovy with wild bouts of riffing and softer, melodic segments. Another pair of killer tracks but it’s all in service to the finale, Bridges to Nowhere.
In service because they prepared the mind, body and soul for this eclectic and wide-ranging epic. A 10+ minute closer that isn’t just the culmination of the musical journey but the apex of Suncraft’s remarkable abilities. It’s the most spectacular effort (how do you explain those blackish metal bursts of guitar?) but every track on this album can easily be called great. Just go listen to the full thing.
