Album Review: Suicide Silence – Remember…You Must Die (Century Media)

Declares founding guitarist, Chris Garza:

Suicide Silence are back to being Suicide Silence. It took years of hell to get here, but we’re better for it.

Enough said. The deathcore California quintet are reinvigorated and looking to the past on their brand-new album, Remember…You Must Die. Out on March 10th, 2023, via Century Media Records.

The ups and downs of Suicide Silence’s 20+ career have been well documented, and it really is something to see them still standing in 2023. What’s even more impressive, is that we’re looking at and hearing a Suicide Silence that has found its place in the metal world. Looking to the ‘glory days’ of their past to re-energise and re-inspire them as they move forward. Outside of their early work, Remember… You Must Die might very well be the most encapsulating Suicide Silence release to date.

Far less experimental, the focus on this album is to deliver blunt force trauma via 11 tracks (and an intro) of unashamed and rigid deathcore heaviness. Capturing the spirit of their origins is one thing though, sounding as though you mean it is another. So, it’s extremely heartening to find Suicide Silence at their most abrasive, aggressive, and animalistic on this album.

Not only that, but it also sees the group’s deathcore sound at its most energised, even when the tempo is filthy and there’s some groove layered in. The simple fact is that this album is one of those bone-breaking, head-crushing, flesh-rendering pit albums. A demanding earful of pant-wetting aggression from the moment it starts, right up to the crunchy end.

Along the way, a bevy of flailing and frenzied riffs and hooks, nosebleed inducing drums, stupidly brutish breakdowns, and vocals that spit, snarl, and spew nothing but intensity. The forces of Suicide Silence are united in their ferocity and passion, feeling more like a complete unit than they’ve done in a while.

The importance of this can’t be understated as the band are mainstay of the extreme scene but they’ve arguably been left behind in recent times by the arrival of fresher and hungrier bands. So, this album is a statement. One that clearly says that Suicide Silence are back at their best but that they’re invigorated more than ever. The past doesn’t define them, but they can certainly use it to enhance the future.

If you’ve been a long-term fan, you won’t be let down by Remember… You Must Die. However, if you’re discovering them for the first time, you might find yourself surprised to learn that they’ve been around since 2002. Such is the strength of their output here and how their deathcore sound is everlasting.

It’s good to have them back.
