Album Review: Spine – Raíces (Convulse Records)
If you’re looking for razor-sharp powerviolence with an ’80s hardcore approach, look no further than Kansas City band, Spine. One of the recent signings to budding underground label Convulse Records (Gel, MSPAINT, Entry), the band will release their third full-length ‘Raíces’ on June 30th.
Twelve tracks long but coming in at under fifteen minutes, Spine are a ‘get in, f**k you up, get out’ kind of powerviolence and hardcore band. Only one track goes past the two-minute mark, and the majority come in at under one.
It is a short and sharp blast to the senses. Yet, it also has some intriguing ideas. Most notably the lyrics being sung in a mix of English and Spanish. Vocalist Antonio Marquez is a bit of a beast in his delivery and his words do stand out.
As does the instrumental chaos, one of the most hectic albums you will hear all year long. It’s as though Spine needed to get this over and done with as quickly as possible. Yet, this level of persistent intensity is captivating and the good thing about it being over so quickly, is that it will appeal to those with super-short attention spans too.
It’s a great example of focused aggression where even the one ‘long’ track, Pure, is still mired in filthy powerviolence groove and hardcore heaviness. Put it on and be prepared to feel like you’ve had the s**t kicked out of you.
