Album Review: Speckmann Project – Fiends Of Emptiness (Emanzipation Productions)

30 years after the debut album was released Speckmann Project returns with a crushing sophomore offering entitled, Fiends of Emptiness. This time in collaboration with Swedish death metal-savant Rogga Johansson, known from Paganizer, Ribspreader, Revolting and a myriad of other bands.

Fiends Of Emptiness will be released on LP (marbled black and red vinyls, each limited to 300 units), CD and digital formats via Emanzipation Productions on April 22nd, 2022.

It’s been a minute since we last covered something Rogga Johansson has been involved in but Paul Speckmann is also becoming a regular name for this website. However, this new album from Speckmann Project is something a bit more special. After all, it’s been 3 decades with a release under this name.

So, what do we have here? An album filled with short and sharp blasts of death metal chaos. Elements of thrash and technical prowess injected to add some variety, in what is, a consistent heated blast to the face. With a punk attitude, Fiends of Emptiness races along with only a handful of tracks passing the three-minute mark. Rogga Johansson providing the razor-sharp riffs and Paul Speckmann providing the guttural vocal growls and gurns. Together, along with punchy percussion and bass hooks, they really make this album sound particularly nasty.

If you’re familiar, and a fan of, both Johannsson and Speckmann’s work elsewhere, you’ll be right at home here. That in itself is a small problem as it’s hard to place this album as its own thing. However, it’s only a small problem because overall, Fiends of Emptiness is a straightforward blazing blast of deathy noise that proves there is still a place at the table for Speckmann Project.
