Album Review: Soulkick – Hide the End (Self Released)

The Argentinian hard rock band Soulkick, who consists of Christian Vidal (Therion) on guitar, Charlie Giardina (former Eric Martin’s Band) on bass, Pablo Garrocho (former Eric Martin’s Band) on drums and Pablo Zuccalá on lead vocals, will be release their second album ‘Hide the End’ on August 6th.

Hard rock from Argentina? We don’t get to hear a lot of that so Soulkick certainly have the attention. The question is, can they hold it across 11 tracks?

It’s a groovy, powerful, and melodic start with Sign of the Times. Soulkick living up to their name with a punt right to the hard rock soul. The highlight? The pre-chorus, with its lovely harmonised vocals and the chorus itself, which is quite infectious.

What is clear from this start is that Soulkick are certainly drawing inspiration from the rockers of old and that becomes more obvious with the animated body shaker that is Last Goodbye. One of the album’s best offerings because it is so catchy. Although On the Road’s deep melody and thrumming bass sound is very appealing too.

Then along comes one of the most melodically pensive efforts in the form of The Lighthouse. Followed by the pernicious groove and empathic energy of Voices in the Night. The groove is strong in this one and makes the heart beat that little faster. Before Reasons takes the album past the halfway point with rocking flair.

It’s a lot of fun so far. Hard to call original, but what can be called original these days? All we can hope for is a rollicking good time and Soulkick are delivering it. The Rope, Empty Faces, Perfect Day, and Make Believe all adding to enjoyment with a bevy of headbangers, danceable hits and melody-focused moodiness. A constant source of hard rock highs and lows.

All leading to a big finale called Carved in Stone, where Soulkick get a little progressive and weird with things. A very cool song on a very cool album.
