Album Review: Son of A Shotgun – Be For Oss Alle (Emanzipation Productions)
Southern death/grind with a twist?
Be For Oss Alle is the new album from Son of A Shotgun, the off-shot Southern death/grind band let by guitar player Ivan “Meathook” Gujic, well-known for his role as the guitar player of Norwegian death metal gods Blood Red Throne.
Be For Oss Alle will be released in digital, LP, and CD formats by Emanzipation Productions on the 11th September 2021.
If you’re unfamiliar with Son of A Shotgun, the Southern twang that greets on Caught on Guard will have you believe you’re about to listen to something with a rockier edge. Then, out of nowhere, it just erupts. A frenzied and uncouth expulsion of sickening death metal mixed with grindcore and touches of powerviolence. It’s a literal ‘what the fuck’ moment.
The gruffness in the vocals, thick metal and unusual turns makes My Bible, My Wife, My Gun a special listen. Before All I Got Left gets pushy and dangerous with its blend of vehement heaviness and relaxing Southern dusty groove, and War Inside’s excellent opening drum solo leads to a ferocious burst of metal that quickens the pulse.
In this day and age, it’s very hard to do something unique but credit to Son of A Shotgun, Be For Oss Alle is certainly that. Pray for Me just doesn’t mess around and is easily one of the nosiest tracks on the album. Screaming and squealing instrumentation for a slice of filthy grindcore.
It’s a couple of violent and angry efforts with the stompy Natural Born Killaz and the belligerent Strike Above the Neck. Son of A Shotgun dropping all groove and melody for a beastly and pit-inducing pair.
Wrapping up with Supak, speed and fury at the forefront for a frenetic finale. It’s one hell of a cool listen. Unique and clever but undeniably savage too.
