Album Review: Slugcrust – Ecocide (Prosthetic Records)

Hailing from the vermin-saturated remains of upstate South Carolina, Slugcrust are preparing to release their debut full length, Ecocide, via Prosthetic Records on September 9th, 2022. Featuring members of Wvrm, Slugcrust embodies true Southern grind in all its grimy, punishing glory.

Twenty-two minutes of unabashed, no-nonsense, and brutalising grind. Slugcrust take a ‘scorched earth’ approach to this album and the overall feeling it leaves is one of revulsion.

Enjoyable revulsion though, especially if extreme is where your taste sits because Ecocide is very extreme. Track after track coming at you in blistering fashion, Slugcrust batter away with undeniable twisted intent. Chaotic and energetic, there’s an underlying punk influence across the album. Notable at times, even if it’s an album predominantly about grinding bones and flesh.

Tracks like Buzzard Czar, Echoless, Petrochemical, Swamp Mind and Event Horizon are examples of where things gets really nasty. Just a handful where the feral speed, scornful vocals and ear-bleeding squeals cut through the malaise of extreme to waken all within earshot out of their tedious existence.

When it comes down to it though, Slugcrust’s Ecocide is all about face-melting speed and heaviness. The simplest and most obvious takeaway as the twenty-two minutes of music hit with all the force of a concrete slab to the skull. Even if you survive, you won’t be feeling too good.
