Album Review: Skindred – Big Tings (Nuclear Blast)

Skindred’s seventh full-length release, Big Tings continues the party band’s style of infectious tunes filled with adrenaline-pumping energy. Like a great night out, for a period you’ll be basking in the warm glow of the good times but like most nights out it will be quickly forgotten in favour of the next one.

Big Tings 2

The title track gets the groove started with style, a bouncy Skindred opener that also serves as an early warning for those hoping for more traditional metal hooks. Big Tings is a much more straight-forward rock and roll album, one reliant on choruses. Look no further than Machine, a clear love letter to AC/DC.

For the most part the reggae metal mob deliver on the promise of arena rock anthems mixed with electronic beats and Benji Webbe’s rapping/singing blend. Tracks like Last Chance, Loud and Clear and Broken Glass fit perfectly alongside the band’s back catalogue and you can see them all being a staple of their lives shows for many years to come.

Big Tings is a good Skindred album and at this point in their career that is better the most. Just don’t be surprised if you’re not listening to it a week down the line.
