Album Review: Six Foot Six – Beggar’s Hill (Scarlet Records)

Pure anthemic heavy metal at its best: ‘Beggar’s Hill’ is the third Six Foot Six record and it will be released on December 8th, 2023, via Scarlet Records.

Lovers of denim and leather rejoice, Six Foot Six are unquestionably an ode to the heavy metal sound of old. Albeit, refined and restored to a more palatable modern ear. Beggar’s Hill continues the impressive achievements of Six Foot Six’s previous releases, adding a bit more thunder and lightening to things to keep the head constantly banging.

We’re talking screaming riffs, screeching solos, thumping drum patterns, and commanding vocals across ten powerful and pervasive tracks. Kicking off with the fist-pumping energy of Raise the Dead, an apt title as it has the vigour to get corpses up and moving. Then following that up with the excitable groove and more anthemic Tears. Before Voices Inside demands the listener pull out their air guitar and feel the dramatic power of Six Foot Six.

Get used to this feeling, Six Foot Six are all about heavy power and it will take a stone-cold person to not find themselves head-banging to the likes of the title track, Analog Man, Riding the Tide, and Fire Will Burn. This band lives and breathes heavy freaking metal.

Yet, the epic taint they have can’t be understated, and this is no more evident than by the three-part A Templar’s Tale that makes up the latter portion of the record. First, it’s The Prodigy, where vigorous riffs and chunky drums help deliver a chorus-driven banger. Then it’s The Siege, where a folkier and melody-led tone takes over (getting strong Blind Guardian vibes here), and The Homecoming ends things in grandiose head-banging and horn-throwing style. A fun closing track, that keeps the positive power vibes going right up to the very end.

One of the best things about this record this the fact that it doesn’t overstay its welcome. Six Foot Six have kept it tight, and with that, kept it exciting. It could have been so easy for them to just keep going, but instead, we have an album that is so much more memorable because it isn’t excessive. It’s ten tracks of heavy metal gold.
