Album Review: Six Feet Under – Nightmares of the Decomposed (Metal Blade Records)

Legendary death metal band Six Feet Under return with their explosive seventeenth full-length, Nightmares Of The Decomposed. Comprised of twelve tracks, it is a defining statement, making it very clear that more than twenty-five years into their career they remain at the forefront of the genre. It will be released on October 2nd 2020 via Metal Blade Records.

With not a single thing to prove, Six Feet Under make their triumphant return during an incredibly strong year for death metal as whole. A year when both the old and new have been putting out some of the strongest extreme music in a while.

Sit down though, the masters are here to show how it’s done.

A filthy and neck-destroying release, there’s a ton of old-school death infused horror to enjoy. Sometimes it’s a ferocious beast getting up close and personal. At other times it’s a crawling and slithering monstrosity that fills the mind with poison. Then there are the times when Six Feet Under combine the two. The grave erupting as the rot is sent skywards in a shower of dried flesh and bleached bone.

The smell of death sticks to everything, the evil spreads far and wide, and evil comes whispering on the wind. Well, whispering might be the wrong word. It’s more like a threatening growl that has a strong air of vehemence behind it. That’s Six Feet Under’s Nightmares of the Decomposed. An album capable of leaving the body in a fitful of shakes. Where the feeling of rot is spreading throughout the body. From the toes to the head, Six Feet Under make this an uncomfortable but evidently unforgettable listen.

Death metal rarely sounds this grimy. Come the end of this near 45-minute listen, you’ll want to take a nice hot shower. Even if you’ll be hoping parts don’t start to fall off.

A lot more modern bands could certainly take some lessons in regards to captivating a listener and sending the mind spiralling into such nightmarish places.
