Album Review: Shards of Humanity – Cold Logic (Unspeakable Axe Records)

Swimming against the tide since the release of their debut in 2014, Memphis-based Shards of Humanity will now unleash their second album. Entitled ‘Cold Logic’, it will be released on April 13th 2020 through Unspeakable Axe Records.

With a side of tech (the guitars are working overtime here), a helping of saucy thrash with a main course of thick and bulbous death metal, Shards of Humanity serve up a beast of a dish with their new album.

The guitars are out of control on the instrumental opener, Cosmic Shield. A literal showcase of the talented insanity with this band, something that settles (slightly) with the more familiar death growl of Martyr’s Gaze. Although to say this track is pushing the limits of heaviness is a bit of an understatement. A screeching thrash-inspired guitar solo part of a frantically fast end.

The blistering pace continues into I’ve Seen Death, Moths of Zeta and the title track. Shards of Humanity having just two settings, hyper-speed and hyper-heavy, with both being on at the same time.

That is certainly not a complaint. Shards of Humanity want to pulverise and there is no denying this exactly what they accomplish here.

Having already shown just how harsh and wild they can be, they push it just a step further with the eye-watering thrash-speed of Bathing Raw in the Blood of Pigs.

At 1:20 in length, Into the Realms of Lower Astral seems like a chance for a breather but it’s not. Instead, we get 1:20 of building horror. The effect uncomfortable and leaving an uneasy feeling which sets up the nasty death metal edge that Docile Masses has.

With two final face melting efforts, Cold Logic reaches its conclusion. If you’re not already feeling battered and bruised, Demonic Crystallized Intelligence and Mechanical Phosphene will deliver the final heavy blows.
