Album Review: Seraph In Travail – A Black Death Incense (Self Released)
A Black Death Incense is the third and latest instalment in Seraph In Travail’s series of full-length recordings that pursue an austere mastery of the art of dark music at the expense of any scene trend or genre convention. It will be released March 19th, 2021.
Combining the epic sound of a symphony with the crushing and intense sound of death metal, Seraph in Travail bring grandness. Eight gargantuan listens that are steeped in dark and frigid wonder. Dangerously entrancing and delectably listenable, the first couple of tracks blaze past in glorious style. Fixed and Dilated, My Bitter End and When They Crown You Queen showcasing the beauty and savagery that comes pouring scornfully from this band.
Hellish vocals that are as guttural as anything playing off cleaner statement-like moments, guitar riffs that scrap and scratch, bass and drums that deliver thumping body blow after body blow, and (of course) lavish symphonic elements that weight these efforts towards the lighter end of the spectrum. Which should be pretty much impossible considering the weapons Seraph in Travail have in their arsenal.
In Hemorrhagic Hues, Dead Scream Kill and For the Wrath of Dying Days continue to lay the stunning destruction on thickly. Tracks that really have a soundtrack vibe thanks to top shelf production and perfectly placed symphonic focus but never drift too far from the death metal chaos we all desire.
Truly epic from beginning to end with no major shakeup of their sound in the latter portion. Not that anyone will be asking for it as Seraph in Travail keep the album nice and concise. The Apostate Coil and Across Bloody Waters, the delicious cherry on top of this ruthless and grandiose listen.
