Album Review: Sense of Noise – Sense of Noise (Self Released)
Sense of Noise are a brand new independent melodic death metal band who will release their self-titled debut album on November 5th, 2021. It features Björn “Speed” Strid (Soilwork) and Antony Hämäläinen (Meridian Dawn, Ancient Settlers, ex-Nightrage) on guest vocals.
Drawing inspiration from the famous Gothenburg melodic death metal scene, Sense of Noise arrive with a bang on their debut album. A tried and tested melo-death bang that thrills and chills in equal measure.
Kicking off with A Forgotten Oath, Sense of Noise bring cinematic flair with an intro that sets up a grander sound than expected. Though the arriving cacophony of melo-death that follows on The Broken Hope makes it clear just where Sense of Noise’s sound sits. A frenzied blast of death, punctuated by wicked riffing and a cleanly sung chorus that just soars. This is one hell of a way to make an impression on your debut.
That strong impression continues into the layered War Within. Here Sense of Noise transition between punchy, heavy groove and uplifting cleaner passages. Following that up with the deep melodic bite of Morning Glory. A track that is dripping in Gothenburg melo-death vibes in the best possible way. One of the strongest tracks on the album and that’s saying something considering there isn’t a bad one to be found here.
March of the Fallen is one of the best for showcasing all the different elements that makes Sense of Noise such a delight to listen too. The riffs, the contrasting vocals, the soloing, the chunky percussion, the dramatic additions… another awesome effort.
The first of two guest vocalists arrive on Zero Killed. Soilwork’s Björn “Speed” Strid stepping up to provide his substantial voice to a frantic blast of melodically tinged heaviness. Whereas Meridian Dawn/Ancient Settlers/ex-Nightrage’s Antony Hämäläinen adds an angrier edge to Rage of Existence. A track most notable for its huge chorus.
In between them we get Our Dying Light, a track that transitions from folkish melodrama to brash and ballsy heaviness. Albeit, still a track with catchiness and sing-along abilities. Before Sense of Darkness ends things in classic melo-death style. Sense of Noise bringing the energy up for one last thumping and thrilling effort.
They’ve absolutely delivered on their promises. Sense of Noise are the new face of melo-death and you’d be a fool to sleep on this one.
