Album Review: Sempiternal Dusk – Cenotaph of Defectuous Creation (Dark Descent Records)

Sempiternal Dusk return with their second full length of primitive death metal doom entitled Cenotaph of Defectuous Creation. Five tracks of pummeling mid-tempo death played with intent and a disdain for modern ‘death metal’ cliche. The murky production of the previous full-length has been dialed back in favor of a bolder and sharper sound, while retaining the despondent atmosphere.

It will be released on the 27th September 2019 via Dark Descent Records.

Dusk

If there was ever an intro that creates a deep sense of dread with its foreboding atmosphere, it’s Caverns of Aural Decay. Filth.

Of course that is just the start of this grimy and dirty death/doom release. An album of exquisite dark suffering that weighs so heavily on the soul, it’s near unbearable. A pummelling performance from a band adept at dishing out so much pain.

Excavated Filth from Dimensional Incarnations and Orgiastic Feast Upon Martyred Flesh spread hate and spitefulness around like manure. Both tracks built on a foundation of blood, guts and gore.

Beneath the Emblems of Death seems like it would be a moment of calm as its only just over a minute long. However, that’s not how Sempiternal Dusk roll so instead we get a speeding wall of noise that is near grind for how chaotic it is.

Don’t expect any sudden changes in sound or style, Refracted Suffering Through the Windows of Hell and Spears of Pestilence are just as rough.

This kind of sonic assault is enjoyable…up to point. After so much though, it does start to melt the brain and you might find yourself zoning out the deeper into the pit you go.
