Album Review: Seething Akira – Sleepy Skeletor (Self Released)

Seething Akira are a 5-piece crossover band from Portsmouth on the south coast of the UK. Created back in 2011 they decided they wanted to create a hybrid band of electronic synths, guitars and “Beastie Boys” style vocals.

The end result is their long-awaited debut album called ‘Sleepy Skeletor’ due to be released on 29th June 2018.

Seething Akira 2

Following in the footsteps of the likes of Skindred, Hacktivist and Don Bronco, Seething Akira make a powerful showing for this years new favourite crossover band. Sleepy Skeletor is 11 tracks of hyper synthy electronica mixed with sharp guitar riffing, hard-hitting beats and almost spoken world vocals.

How you feel about this combination will almost certainly see you making your mind up before you’ve even heard a track but don’t dismiss this right away. While it doesn’t start off well (The Monster from Brussels) it picks up quickly with the groovy and catchy Matching Poles of the Magnets.

That’s followed by the more impactful Half Empty, a track that brings with a bit of bite and a more ‘realistic’ broodiness.

Seething Akira’s raw vocals is what makes them more appealing. Lyrics fired out as though it’s a sermon and the synth/guitars are the choir. It’s this that makes a lot of Sleepy Skeletor far better to listen too as it does lean so heavily towards electronica and drum & bass. That and a lot of the choruses as Backlash and Paralysed (the best track on the album) show.

When Sleepy Skeletor is good, it’s really good as the aforementioned Paralysed and Even Angels Break Hearts prove. The latter’s inclusion of female vocals by Dani Uziel really adds something to the more melodic track.

This is definitely an album that is going to get a lot of attention.
