Album Review: Scarlet – Obey The Queen (Arising Empire)

Obey the Queen is the riotous debut album from Scarlet. Something that flawlessly exemplifies the complexity and duality of Scarlet’s being. Her outer beauty and her inner chaos. Her kindness and her evil. Her forgiveness and her taste for blood. She is a gorgeous creature that personifies the darkest, ugliest corners of the human mind and she is never who you think she is.

In her own words:

Making this album I had to go deep deep down to the darkest, most painful place inside me. Dig through memories hidden behind walls of thorns. Unbury years of tormented rage. It almost killed me. Through survival comes greatness. I want this record to inspire people to be themselves. To live free. Obey the Queen is a mark in history. A world domination. It’s a new world now.

Obey the Queen is out on November 13th, 2020 via Arising Empire.

If there’s one positive takeaway from Obey the Queen, it is that it is an album dripping in attitude. A “fuck you” attitude that most will be easily able to get behind especially when Scarlet puts the arseholes of the world on blast. Tracks like Ugly Fucker, dealing with receiving unsolicited nudes and #Bossbitch, which talks about female oppression in the workplace.

It’s the topical stuff coming from an artist who has the experience to relay her thoughts in a listenable way. On the subject matter, with a passionate and artistic performance, this is a worthwhile listen. Scarlet is an artist who you want to hear more from.

However, from a musical perspective, Obey the Queen is a serious hit and miss listen. Super heavy on the electronica and filled with nu-metal style beats and groove, it is produced to such an extent that it’s jarring as hell a lot of the time. It makes it difficult to enjoy.
