Album Review: Samiam – Stowaway (Pure Noise Records)
Samiam have returned! The Oakland, CA punk legends will release Stowaway, their first new album in 12 years, due out March 31st via Pure Noise Records.
A fast and frenetic start, the punk energy and vibes are strong in the hearty opener of Lake Speed. Samiam setting the bar high early with a layered statement of their return to prominence.
The anthemic qualities continue into the poppier/rockier Crystallized and Lights Out, Little Hustler. Where Samiam showcase melodies and a soulful side that lifts the spirits in a delightfully different way. A pair of undeniable catchy hits that combine the best parts of pop, rock, and punk.
Something that stays consistent as the album goes on. Where tracks like Shoulda Stayed, Shut Down, Scout Knife, and Monterey Canyon deliver a bevy of heartfelt, good time, energetic, and powerful riffs, beats, hooks, and vocals. At least one of these tracks will get your feet tapping, fingers drumming, and head-banging.
Then there’s the smile that Natural Disasters and Stanley puts on the face. All because of lovely lyrical content, bass hums, punchy riffs, and overall melody. Each having a very memorable chorus. Samiam continue to impress, entertain, and satisfy.
Which, happily, means there is no getting sick of what they have to offer as they hit one of their most dramatic highs with the powerful Highwire. Before Sometimes’ basic and energetic rhythm picks the pace up nicely. Followed by the longest track on the album, the title track. A surprisingly big sounding finale that has a really upbeat vibe and is the cherry on top of an extremely enjoyable album.
One that is uncomplicated and very easy to relax to. Sit back, chill out, and enjoy.
