Album Review: Sabrewulf – Mala Suerte (Petrichor)

The origins of Sabrewulf go back to 2011 when 4 friends in El Paso, Texas decided they wanted to form a band together that would leave a permanent mark on the scene. Throughout the years Sabrewulf recorded and released several singles and EPs and released those digitally.

After carefully constructing their new material Sabrewulf entered the studio to record their album ’Mala Suerte’. It will be released on November 6th 2020 via Petrichor.

With a bite as devastating as their bark, Sabrewulf come slathering forward with rabid and violent intent. The madness in their eyes is incoming death, painful and bloody death. Each track, a flesh-tearing chomp that will have most begging for the sweet release of nothing.

The blackened death meta fury that this band exudes is raw. The guitars of early offerings such as Grave of Pestilence and Warbreeder are like the buzzing of fat and greasy flies over a corpse. It would be just noise if it wasn’t for the terrific drum beat and virulent vocal hooks.

There is undoubtedly a bedding in period with Mal Suerte but by the time the short jabs of guitar soloing appear on Bottom Dweller, most will be feeling pretty damn comfortable with Sabrewulf’s brand of savagery.

So, it’s quite a surprise to find Final Prayer having a much moodier vibe and showcasing cleanly sung vocals. It’s super short though and is quickly followed by the raging pits of noise that are Inverted Faith, Ritual Skin and Coffin Nails. The latter two are stunningly confined wraps of desperate intensity.

Marked for Death doesn’t hang about either but has a really evil edge that makes it one of the album highlights. Sabrewulf proving they can be as devastating even when the tempo is not as hot. Before the title track sees them really expand with a lengthy and mood-altering finale.

It takes a moment to really get into gear but when it does, the album proves to be one of 2020’s most ferocious releases.
