Album Review: Royal Tusk – Altruistic (MNRK Heavy)

Back from the brink, alternative rock/metal band Royal Tusk will release their hotly-anticipated third album ‘Altruistic’ on February 23rd, 2023, via MNRK Heavy.

The one word that sums up Royal Tusk’s new album is ‘anthemic’. An album that delivers brash accessible hits of infectious modernised rock and metal from beginning to end. An album filled with a massive amount of heart and soul, and an album that stays with you long after it is over. Royal Tusk are back, and Altruistic is them putting the exclamation point on their musical output to date.

The anthems start immediately with the thumping groove of Fire in Your Veins, a track with a stupidly catchy chorus, and the melody-focused Hated, a track with another huge sounding chorus. If you learn one thing about the first portion of this record, it is that Royal Tusk are going to do everything to make sure you come away feeling mightily satisfied.

Satisfaction is guaranteed though, thanks to head-bangers and body-movers like Head Up and Relegate. The modern blend of riffy rockiness and pop-infused melody is simply lovely and these two tracks showcase this perfectly.

Then there is the likes of All My Life, a track that nails the sense of feeling that exists in every part of this release. The Death of Common Sense, an absolute barn-burner of vigorous rock, and Here on Out, a track that is all about its chorus, but what a chorus it is.

Now, you might come into this album thinking that it surely can’t be that catchy. Surely it can’t be ten tracks that are equally anthemic. Well, I thought the exact same, and I was wrong. It’s damn good to be wrong occasionally too. Especially when there’s only joy to be found in the energetic likes of the title track, the powerful moody vibes of Breathe, and the moving melodic finale of Something Like the Truth. Brilliant right to the very end.

As far as returns go, and as far as continuing to prove that all the fuss around them is warranted, Altruistic couldn’t be a better release. They’ve absolutely delivered something that will be loved today, and loved years into the future too.
