Album Review: Roswell – The Original Sin (Self Released)

Roswell, the Mexican rock band, are back with a brand-new album, the eagerly awaited ‘The Original Sin’, out on April 18th, 2025.

They’ve proven in the past to be a creative force, but what really makes this album special is the clear progression that the four-piece have had. Not only evolving their rock sound in heavier and more emotive ways but developing layers that gives their music more atmosphere.

Which is how the album begins, with dramatic atmosphere that feels sinful. It’s the intro of The Ecstasy of Saint Theresa and it sets the scene for Roswell to come screaming out of the starting gates with the heavy rock power of The Fortune Teller. It’s a wild showcase of energy and will have many listeners well and truly shaking their bodies and banging their heads.

Whereas that track has a raw feel that is clearly rooted in rock, the following All My Love Songs are Ghost Stories has a smoother, cleaner, and goth punk feel. It’s an unexpected change in tone, a bit jarring, but Roswell’s rock style still shines through overall, and this ends up being one of the album’s more infectious efforts.

It’s certainly complimented by the following Alice (Dyscalculia: A Sad Story of Epic Miscalculation). A track that tells a darker version of the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ story in spectacular fashion. Sure, it’s moody, but that doesn’t mean you can’t move your body to it. Likewise, Where the Wild Things Are has a lot of melancholic melody, and it is really effective. Especially as Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘A Dream’ poem inspired it.

However, if emotion is what you’re after, nothing is touching Queen of Pain, even with its potent rock power. The latter part of this track might bring tears to the eyes as a spectacular orchestra and choir picks up and the track transforms into something epic.

Finally, it’s a hefty run of tracks, beginning with the dramatic WWII inspired The Man That Never Existed. Followed by the ‘straight-forward’ head banger that is Old School and the smile-inducing Through Thick and Thin (25% of Perfection). Three unique efforts on an album full of unique ideas. Most of which are interesting and exciting. Roswell deserve a bit more attention when this is the sort of stuff they’re producing.
