Album Review: Rise To The Sky – Every Day, A Funeral (Meuse Music Records)
Chilean musician Sergio González Catalán, the man behind atmospheric death/doom band Rise to The Sky, brings us Every Day, A Funeral. The fifth full length Rise to The Sky album, out on May 6th, 2022 via Meuse Music Records.
My love and adoration for Rise to The Sky continues to grow with each release. Since falling down the rabbit hole of melancholic metal with the album, Death Will Not Keep Us Apart, it’s been a wild ride of captivating releases. A Cold Embrace from Life, Let Me Drown in You, Per Aspera Ad Astra… incredible release after incredible release.
Such high bars set, such personal expectation, such desire to disappear into the cold, dark and emotional world of Rise to The Sky would surely eventually falter. Maybe that will happen one day but that day is not today.
Once again, Sergio González Catalán proves himself to be one of the most talented solo musicians out there with an album that is aching with emotional value. An album that is irresistibly beautiful but also unashamedly dark and heavy. The combination of atmospheric grandeur and mind-crushing death-infused doom creates a towering melancholic monstrosity that hypnotises from beginning to end.
There’s a lot of weight bearing down upon you throughout Every Day, A Funeral. A mass of brutal doom pressing down upon the brain. However, Rise to The Sky knows exactly when to relieve the burden. Either by switching the tone up to something more heart-wrenching, changing the tempo or just pausing the pressure momentarily. It makes each track an intuitive listen, where there’s no doubt that this level of emotionally-wrought music could have been anything but utterly authentic.
The detail in Every Day, A Funeral makes for a challenging listen. This is an album where multiple go-rounds will unveil so much more. The ‘wow factor’ of the first impression isn’t diminished because now you’re unearthing the nuances and finding parts that passed by originally in a haze of melancholy. Such is the impressive and varied music on this album, even with such forlorn roots, it’s one that is near-impossible to not come back to time after time.
Once again, Rise to The Sky has produced an album of the year contender and once again, it is an unforgettable experience.
