Album Review: Revolting – Night of the Horrid (Xtreem Music)
‘Night of the Horrid’ is the ninth album from Swedish death metal band, Revolting. It is set to be released on December 17th via Xtreem Music.
Featuring the legendary Rogga Johansson (Vocals/Guitars), alongside Grotesque Tobias (Bass) and Mutated Martin (Drums), it should come as little surprise to those unfamiliar with Revolting that the trio are a nasty, primitive, brutal, and ugly sounding band. There’s no excuse though to have not experienced their particular brand of death metal considering this is their ninth album overall.
So, what do you they have to offer? Garish intensity and horrible heaviness that delivers a cacophony of familiar, but likable, death metal noise. Furiously fast and ferociously focused, it’s nine manic efforts, and one extensive experimental Outro that oozes thick and sinister atmosphere. It’s one hell of an ending, but not too much of a surprise as across the album there are many moments that makes this a more exciting listen overall.
It’s a rampant display of mutilating heaviness with the opening track Seven Severed Heads, followed by a bloody level of death-focused infectiousness with Blades Will Cut, before the title track unleashes a fury so powerful it will make your eyes water and your ears bleed. Johansson is sounding particularly savage.
Though that isn’t going to be to much of a surprise as the man is one hell of a talent and is complimented by two artists also capable of delivering death metal flair. This means there’s no getting bored as Hell from the Sky, A Song for the Morbid, Shapeshifter, and Swipe of the Scythe showcases scourging riffing, rancid vocals, and rambunctious drumbeats, all with a flamboyance that stands out.
Come the final few tracks, most will still find themselves invested in what Revolting are doing here, even with a rawness that seeps into the soul, turning it blacker, bit by bit. First, there is The Final Journey and one hell of a robust head banger as far as riffing goes, and then there is Mallet and Mask, a brutish effort that sets up the aforementioned Outro nicely. A seriously solid listen all round, Revolting are so damn consistent.
