Album Review: Replicant – Malignant Reality (Transcending Obscurity Records)

Unheralded death metal kings Replicant return with a new standard for contemporary death metal. Called ‘Malignant Reality’, it will be released on September 10th, 2021 via Transcending Obscurity Records.

A new standard because Replicant have crafted one of the most unpredictable death metal albums in some time. One that is wholeheartedly death metal, aggressive and heavy throughout but with more twists and turns than a Rubik’s cube being solved.

Discordant and harsh, technical and tight, furious and feral, melodic and airy… Malignant constantly assaults the senses and consistently surprises. Although the blistering ruthlessness is not. That aspect, while expected from a death metal release, is still on the harsher and harder end of the scale. Albeit with a ton of fascinating refinement, the sort of stuff that makes you realise you’re listening to a band on a different level.

Simply put, if you want your death metal to smash you over the head then Malignant Reality will deliver, no question. However, if you’re after more nuances and detail, the sort of stuff to knock you out of a death metal malaise, then it will also deliver on that!

It’s never boring and that is testament to the power of Replicant.
