Album Review: Relics of Humanity – Absolute Dismal Domain (Willowtip Records)

Brutal death metal quartet, Relics of Humanity, are set to release new album, ‘Absolute Dismal Domain’, on January 31st, 2025, through Willowtip Records.

A concept record, that, according to the band, is about absolute ubiquitous annihilation of light, both spiritually (god) and physically (sun and stars). So, an album caked in darkness, which means no-one should really be surprised to learn that it’s also some of the heaviest and most brutal stuff heard this year. A statement that will likely still ring true come the end. Yes, it really is that harsh and horrible sounding.

It’s the vocals more than anything else that make this such an unpleasant experience. Barely human, what we have here is a combination of roars, growls, and gurgles. Take that sound, then combine it with guitars that strip the flesh, drums that pulverise the bones, and stretch that across nine tracks. Unrelenting is an understatement.

It doesn’t sound like it\s much fun, does it? Rest assured though, especially if you have taste for the viscera that brutal death metal often offers, it has impact. Few bands are brave enough, or creative enough, to deliver something that is consistently forceful. Repetition should affect it, ruin it almost, yet there’s enough variety in song structure and style to keep things interesting.

Sometimes the album is fast and aggressive in a more classic death metal style, sometimes it takes a more methodical approach and infuses doomy tones in, and sometimes, even thicker layers of darkness are poured over. There are many tracks that showcase all of this, and more, but one such track that hums with gloomy life is the title track. A personal favourite.

It, like many others, lives up to the concept. It’s not just darkness flooding in; it’s the way in which the unrelenting approach snuffs out the light. It was there, and then along came Relics of Humanity with Absolute Dismal Domain to take it all away.

It is egregiously heavy, there’s no denying that fact, but thanks to their concise approach, it doesn’t feel too much. It is an excellent brutal death metal album that will appeal to those who like brutal death metal. Up there as the heaviest of heavies.
