Album Review: Reasons Behind – Project: M.I.S.T. (Scarlet Records)
Over the course of the career, Reasons Behind evolved from a symphonic metal band with electronic influences into a more synth-oriented sounding outfit.
Their sophomore record ‘Project: M.I.S.T.’ is a concept album about life and reality, enriched by lyrics that depict all the facets of human existence: a modern metal sci-fi rollercoaster that will take the listener through a breathtaking journey weaved from a stream of images and tunes. It is out on August 21st via Scarlet Records.
The blending of symphonic metal with synth and electronica is certainly an intriguing one. There’s no denying it makes for a stimulating listen regardless of any pre-conceived notions you might have towards it.
The real selling point is the sci-fi elements, something that shows such promise on the eerie and spacey intro of Unplugged. Unfortunately, aside from the initial build in, Fireflies in the Wind fails to spark. The symphonic side of the band much more dominating and aside from a strong vocal performance, it doesn’t really stand out.
This is corrected for the hotter and heavier edge of A Hidden Thread (the effects on the vocals are cool too) and the colourful Shades of Neon. The latter, a much more refined effort that gets the neck muscles moving.
The beat is energetic for Ghostwired, a track that feels very other-worldly and is a highlight. Before Reasons Behind simplify things with Beyond the Black and Living A Lie. The former focused on the chorus and latter delivering sharp and moving effects. These are tracks that are very easy to enjoy, even if there’s not a ton of variety.
That would make Binary Stars one to forget if it wasn’t for the incredible vocal performance.
A discombobulated intermission (Between Here and Awake) serves a reminder of the sci-fi nature of the record. Enhanced by the starry drifting intro to (E)met. A track that kicks it up a nice extra notch while also having some mellow passages. It leads to the melodic finale of No Dawn to Come, a finale that holds plenty of power. Something that can be found throughout the album overall.
