Album Review: Rages of Sin – Divergence (Self Released)
Established in Rages of Sin hail from The Hauge in Holland and play a style of death/thrash metal. Inspired by the Swedish melodic death metal scene, bands like Hypocrisy, Opeth and Soilwork. Their new album, Divergence will be released on the 25th April 2020.
With a roar, a blast of guitars and drums, Rages of Sin bring the intensity as only death metal can do. Divergence is 8 tracks long and doesn’t hold back for even a second, especially with the opening heavy gambit of Defeasance. A very feral start.
It’s a shift in tone with cleaner singing and a chunky set of riffs for Deference, followed by a surprisingly expansive number in Defiance. A track that comes in at over 10 minutes long and goes through all the highs and lows of what melodic death metal should be. Painfully sharp riffs, thumping percussion, a wide array of hooks, soloing that buoys the soul… it has got everything.
So much so that it takes a moment to shift the mind back towards Rages of Sin’s faster and more intense jabs. Dalliance, Derivance and Deliverance all poking and prodding away with purpose, until you’re ready to scream and shout in reply.
It’s very effective and very striking metal.
Culminating in the high point of Deviance, a track where the guitars just scream and the drums put the exclamation point on everything. Before Descendants’ very epic guitar intro gives way to glorious clean singing and a hyper solo to end a top shelf track and album.
