Album Review: Putrescence – Voiding Upon the Pulverized (Eclectic Productions)

Voiding Upon the Pulverized is the new album from US deathgrind band, Putrescence. It is out on November 20th 2017 via Eclectic Productions.

Deathgrind is certainly an acquired taste, one that normally involves a mouth full of vomit & bile. A raw, sonically destructive sound that when done wrong sounds like a bunch of Barry White impersonating Ilama’s falling down a flight of stairs. However when it’s done right, we get a gritty & challenging experience that still sounds like a bunch of Barry White impersonating Ilama’s falling down a flight of stairs but this time you’re enjoying it.

Thankfully it’s the latter that comes across with Putrescence‘s latest excretion. Short & to the point but covered in sharp thorns, it doesn’t even pretend to be anything but a massive ‘fuck you’. Voiding Upon The Pulzerived, Unrecognizable Me and Air Hissing Out Of Shanked Up Throat quickly deliver disgusting & vile sounds that wouldn’t sound out of place in a horror flick.

Detrunked Wizard Hacked To Bloody Pieces, Pt. II is the first time Putrescence slow things down, albeit briefly, to deliver a flashy offering of doomy meatiness.

The assault begins anew with quick blasts of aggression. I Shit Your Pants, Squeeze And Squint Until Eyes Water, Burnt Off Mucus Membranes…all being fired off at an intense pace.

The album does begin to drift away in the latter half as the raw, nearly unlistenable (at times) mesh of noise stops sounding so unique & begins to feel overly familiar. The attention begins to wander a little easier. Thankfully Putrescence are having none of that & quickly right the ship while giving you some hard slaps around the back of the head for not paying enough attention.

Sticking with the short & sharp jabs, Voiding Upon The Pulzerived ends with one final push & it hurts. A more rhythmic approach & higher pitched vocals makes for a good finish to a damn fine album. Noisy & likely to leave you a little unsteady but worth it.
