Album Review: Predatory Void – Seven Keys To The Discomfort Of Being (Century Media Records)
Consisting of guitarist Lennart Bossu (Amenra, Oathbreaker, Living Gate), vocalist and tattoo artist Lina R. (Cross Bringer), bassist Tim De Gieter (Amenra, Doodseskader, Much Luv Studio), guitarist Thijs De Cloedt (Cobra The Impaler, ex-Aborted) and drummer Vincent Verstrepen (Carnation), Predatory Void are here to give metal a kick up the ass. Their debut album ‘Seven Keys to the Discomfort of Being’ will be released on April 21st, 2023, via Century Media Records.
With influences taken from across the metal spectrum, Predatory Void combine their talented forces and enigmatic imaginations to deliver something uniquely chaotic, garishly extreme, and egregiously creative. There is no lumping Predatory Void into one single category as it incorporates black, death, hardcore, shoegaze, and so much more.
Call it extreme music born from extreme times.
Showcasing seven intense examples of abrasive heaviness and bold speed coalescing with eerie and lingering melodies. Seven Keys to the Discomfort of Being is an exhausting experience from beginning to end. Where the sense of discombobulation is felt throughout. The tone and tempo shifts hit with constant force, and the dedication to being as savage as humanly possible is immensely felt. All before the rug is pulled out from underneath with chilling melody and clean singing.
For all its viciousness, there’s no predicting the directions that Predatory Void take the album in. Just contrast something like (struggling…) and Seeds of Frustration to understand that completely.
These direction changes and shifts feel incredibly natural though. It’s all part of the Predatory Void makeup and it’s as fresh as you can possibly get when it comes to such extreme music. As, be under no false impressions, Predatory Void’s debut album is uncompromisingly brutal most of the time. The instrumentation is jagged and coarse, the vocals are demonical, and there is a constant sense of threat coming from every faucet.
Predatory Void deliver on their promises and then some. Seven Keys to the Discomfort of Being is a triumph of brutish noise.
